Our Storyby Caroline Bowmer, posted 05 Oct 2020
My name is Caroline and I’m the founder of Expert Teacher Tutors. After being a chemistry teacher for fourteen years and Head of Science for eight years, I decided to start Expert Teacher Tutors. I’ve always loved teaching and tutoring – I love seeing children understand new topics and grow in confidence.
The Trigger: A couple of years ago, my lovely niece needed some tutoring for her GCSE exams. Although she was incredibly hard working and a bright girl, she wasn’t making much progress, even with the tutoring. When I was chatting to her mum, I was so shocked to realise that the tutors didn’t have a criminal records check (a DBS-check) and that tutoring was unregulated, so there were no minimum standards, no Ofsted equivalent, no guarantee that the tutor was actually who they said they were or their ability to tutor successfully! At that point I decided to gather a group of like-minded teachers and do tutoring as it should be done.
Our Vision: We want to be the best tutors; to offer outstanding tuition to enable children of all abilities to succeed. We have:
• Qualified teachers • Subject specialists • Experience in teaching the new exams • DBS checks • Friendly and supportive tutors • Written feedback to parents after every lesson • Flexibility with no minimum tie-in • Baseline assessments to find out exactly how to help children to progress • Personalised learning plans for every student • Learning manager tracks each child’s progress
So Far… Expert Teacher Tutors started in 2018 and our first students sat their exams in summer 2019. On average, at both GCSE and A Level, our students made two grades progress. We couldn’t be prouder of them!
We now have teachers in Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, German, Spanish, History, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Sports Science and specialist Primary teachers. We have lessons in person in our students’ homes and online, and we’re delighted to be involved in home schooling some of our students. We also work with councils and schools to offer alternative schooling.
One of the loveliest things is to see the progress made by our students, both academically and in their confidence.
It has been an amazing year! I absolutely love what I do and am so lucky to work with all of our lovely families.
Thank you so much for your support!
Best wishes, Caroline
